Kenya & Uganda: A History of Brotherhood

Kenya and Uganda share so many things - not only a common border, but communities that sprawl onto both sides of the border with kin who live on either side of the border. Be it Pokot, Sabaot (Sabei), Turkana, Samia, Teso people are found on both sides of the border. Heck, how do you think Ugandan Stephen Kiprotich won an Olympic medal in the marathon? The Sabei (in Uganda) who are the same people as the Sabaot (in Kenya), have produced incredible international athletes. We have the Langi, Adhola, and Acholi are very closely related to the Luo people of Kenya, with similar names and languages, having originated in Sudan and separated when they migrated southwards from Sudan.

The Buganda Kingdom was the largest and most powerful state in East Africa during the 18th and 19th centuries, extending far into the area now known as Kenya. Both Uganda and Kenya were brought under the influence of the British and were ruled by the Imperial British East African Company before the British Crown took over. Many prominent Kenyans were educated at Makerere University of Uganda, including a former president of Kenya, cabinet ministers, and other Kenyan trailblazers in the 1950s.

Kenya, on the other hand, helped shelter many Ugandan families during the terrible times of Idi Amin and Obote. So for the Nomads who will be heading to Uganda in the Pearl of Africa Expedition I, it will be a journey to the land of their brothers and sisters.

This Pearl of Africa Expedition I is the first of many expeditions that will be organized by the Mara Nomads to Uganda.
