Unveiling the Jewels of Africa: The Lake Malawi & Victoria Falls Expedition

Embrace the adventure of a lifetime as we embark on an unforgettable expedition across four breathtaking African countries! Witness the raw power of Victoria Falls, one of the world's natural wonders, and lose yourself in the serenity of Lake Malawi, aptly nicknamed "The Lake of Stars."

Coming hot after our two epic international trips to Uganda (Pearl of Africa Expedition - Murchison Falls) and Ethiopia (Jade Sea Expedition - Omo Valley) that took us into Omo Valley in Southern Ethiopia, comes this fantastic expedition traversing 4 different countries, scenic landscapes, tranquil lakes, hot springs, mountains, forests, mighty waterfalls and tropical beaches.

In the Lake Malawi & Victoria Falls Expedition, we will visit the natural wonder that is Victoria Falls, and one of Africa's best-kept travel secrets, Lake Malawi.

Lake Malawi, aka “The Lake of Stars”, aka the “Calendar Lake”

When David Livingstone first saw Lake Nyassa, now Lake Malawi, in 1859, he was so thoroughly bewitched by its beauty that he named it “The lake of stars”, describing the lake as a myriad of winking galaxies glittered from the crystal facets of the water. That apt description, rings true today as it was almost a century and a half ago. Another interesting fact about Lake Malawi is that its known as the “Calendar Lake” due to the fact that it is 365 miles from top to bottom, 52 miles at its widest point, and 12 main rivers flow into the lake!

Victoria Falls, aka "Mosi-oa-Tunya"

Located in the heart of Africa, where the mighty Zambezi River carves a path through ancient rock, lies legendary place called "Mosi-oa-Tunya" by the locals, meaning, "The Smoke That Thunders" – Victoria Falls. But Victoria Falls isn't just a waterfall; it's a symphony of power, beauty, and mystery. Imagine a curtain of water, a mile wide and nearly 350 feet tall, plunging into a churning abyss. The deafening roar can be heard miles away, announcing the arrival long before you see it. A permanent cloud of mist hangs above the falls, a misty veil woven by the relentless assault of water on rock. This mist, shimmering with rainbows on sunny days, is where the legend begins.

Victoria Falls is more than just a tourist destination; it's a place where nature flexes its muscles, a place where legends come alive. It's a place that will leave you breathless, humbled, and forever changed by its raw, untamed beauty.

What you need to know

✅ This is a AWD and 4x4 cars' trip with reasonably good ground clearance due to gigantic car-swallowing potholes in some of the countries we will be visiting or passing through. The distances involved will make it a very taxing trip. If you are not used to long trips, you can consider coming with a friend or family member who can help you on the wheel so that you rest. What You Need to Know:

The Journey Unfolds:

  • Early Departures: To ensure a smooth journey and keep us on track to finish the Expedition in 17 days, be ready to be starting the days (other than rest days) bright and early to avoid traffic congestion, speed limits like the 50km/h of Tanzania, hectic border crossings, and enable us handly anything unforeseeble that the roads might throw on us.
  • Diverse Terrain: Expect a mix of paved roads, off-road adventures, and potential border crossings. Vigilance and attentiveness are crucial.
  • Fuel Planning: Plan your fuel situation strategically. If need be, carry a fuel jerry can or two for those long stretches between major towns along the route.
  • Road conditions: The entire road network on the route is tarmac varying from excellent tarmac to terrible potholed stretches. Ensure that your tires have like 90% tread-life left including your SPARE TIRE! Carry a puncture repair kit. Worn tires will suffer plenty of punctures unlike good tires.
  • Vigilance and attentiveness: However, this poses a risk of fatigue. Heavy traffic on the road, including heavy trucks, necessitates utmost vigilance and attention to avoid accidents and mishaps. Also drivers need to obey traffic laws and drive carefully.
  • Border crossings: The border crossings pose a time-facto risk due to the many vehicles that are cleared there and queuing, hence making the need for early departures crucial.
  • Stops and health breaks: Unnecessary stops and time-wasting is discouraged. Nomads are to stick with official designated health break points, or if they have to stop, then they will have to catch up with the convoy.
  • Total distance: In total, we'll be covering a distance of approximately 6,500+/-km, all on tarmac. It's crucial to plan your fuel needs accordingly between the major towns where we will be stopping to refuel and stretch. Major fuel multinationals such as Shell, Total and Rubis are found in all along the route.
  • Time is of the essence: Punctuality is key to ensure a seamless experience for all participants.

Prepare for an unforgettable adventure and ensure your vehicle is ready and well equipped for this remarkable expedition.
