OF VISITS BY ANCIENT KURDS, CHINESE AND PORTUGUESE

MALINDI

Malindi is an ancient town at the Kenyan coastline with beautiful white sandy beaches, surrounded a thick verdant green forest (the 400 sq. km Arabuko Sokoke Forest), and world-class resorts. It is notable for being visited by the famous Chinese explorer Zheng He and later on by the famous Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama.

Over 15 reasons why a visit to Malindi is a must-visit:

Its relaxed atmosphere, sunny weather, swahili-inspired architecture, pristine beaches, fresh seafood, friendly locals, search for forest elephants at Arabuko Sokoke Forest, The Falconry, the Marafa Depression (Hell’s Kitchen), the 522 years’ old Vasco da Gama pillar and the Portuguese Chapel, dolphin watching, snorkelling and scuba diving at Malindi Marine Park, and sundowners at Mida Creek, a full day trip on a Dhow with hot seafood lunch at sea exploring islands, secluded beach spots, snorkelling, a seafood lunch, and sundowner drinks.

Beach Camping

On this group tour, you will be camping on the pristine, white sandy beaches of Mambrui. You will chill and sleep right by the shores of the blue waters of the Indian Ocean, with blue skies and trillions of stars over your head, white sand under your feet, you will walk barefoot in absolute freedom, your only attire for the trip will be a bikini or a beach short, sipping cold Magharitas or cold beer as you bask on the sand and take numerous dips in the ocean.

For those who will have the energy and are full of curiosity, a short jaunt to Marafa Depression aka Hell's Kitchen will sate their curiosity but before catching sunsets at Marafa, they will go to check out the famous Mambrui Sand Dunes.

Itinerary

05:30 Assemble at Signature Mall at Mlolongo on Mombasa Road. Trip briefing and final checks. 06:00 Departure to Malindi, via the Mombasa Road and Tsavo East National Park 11.00 Quick stopover at Mtito Andei for provisions, fuel and a very early lunch. Strictly 30 minutes only. 12.00 Arrive at Manyani Gate of Tsavo East National Park. While Mara Nomads is handling park entry formalities and payments, you will air down because of corrugations, numerous shallow dry river crossings and for the safety of your car and the occupants. 12:30 Engage 4H or lock your hubs to engage the 4wd system of your car for safety purposes since you will be going offroad for 99 km inside the park. You will enjoy very good wildlife views since Tsavo East is packed with wildlife, especially its famous red elephants. Gazelles, zebras, giraffes, monkeys, baboons, ostriches, buffaloes are just some of the many animals you will see 13.30 Arrive at Lugard Falls. You will be able to step out of the car, enjoy the views of Galana River (also known as Athi River in Nairobi and Ukambani and River Sabaki in Malindi where it empties into the Indian Ocean). 30 minutes stop, then we proceed to Crocodile Point. Lugard Falls is 23 km from Manyani Gate. 14.00 We will stop at Crocodile Point for 10 minutes and Hippo Point for another 10 minutes then proceed to Sala Gate of Tsavo East National Park where we will exit the Park and find good tarmac. Sala Gate is 71kms from Lugard Falls. 15.30 Arrive at Sala Gate and exit. Everyone will pump up their tires, unlock their hubs and go back to 2H because it's a good tarmac road all the way to Malindi. Carry a small portable air compressor. 17.00 Arrive at Malindi Town and stop for 30 minutes, then proceed to our beach campsite. Malindi is 108kms from Sala Gate. 18.00 Arrive at the Beach Campsite, and set up camp on the beach. Thereafter it's all team bonding and chilling. A bonfire will be lit on the beach. Stories, laughter, banter time.

06.00 or 07.00 Wake up, catch the sun rising from over Indian Ocean. Take a slow morning beach walk while everything is still silent and the only sounds are the waves crashing gently on the beach and soft sounds of the Coconut Palm tree fronds. Or enjoy your sleep and rest after the long journey to Malindi. Spend the morning taking it easy around the beach campsite and soak in the sun. 14.00 Drive to the Mambrui Sand Dunes and marvel at them. 15.00 Drive to Marafa Depression aka Hell's Kitchen. It's 36 km, a 50-minute drive from the campsite. 16.00 Arrive at Marafa Depression and take a walk into the Canyon-like depression that is like a smaller version of the Great Canyon of the US. It gets very hot during the day hence advisable to visit in the late afternoon when it's cooler. Also sunset makes the land features in the depression almost come alive with many hues and colours being reflected by the setting sun. 17.30 Return back to the campsite for dinner, drinks, more relaxation, banter and a bonfire.

06:00 or 07.00 Wake up, catch the sun rising from over Indian Ocean, enjoy a morning beach walk, or take a last dip in the ocean. Make and have breakfast, then pack in readiness for the journey back home. 08.00 Break camp, bid the beach bye and leave for Malindi Town. 08.30 Fuel up at Malindi and get any provisions needed. Check the vehicles for the 589km (9h 44 min) drive back. 09.00 Depart Malindi Town for the journey back home. We will be using the Kilifi - Kaloleni – Mariakani - Nairobi Road instead of the Malindi - Sala – Manyani Road, for a smoother and faster drive. 13.00 Quick stopover for lunch at Mtito Andei. 18.00 Arrive back in Nairobi End of trip.

FAQs

The group tour ends on the 3rd day from the start day at Malindi- basically Nairobi and Coast guys will be free to depart to their various destinations back on the 8th day.

This is a self-catering trip and clients will be staying at a privately-owned beach campsite and resort. Therefore camping gear will be required. The campsite has facilities like toilets, showers and water, so guys should be relatively comfortable. Carry your food and cooking equipment. If you do not wish to cook, there is a restaurant that prepares food on order as well as a bar (for cold drinks) within the campsite. Don't forget to carry your swimming gear and light clothes.

If you do not have camping equipment such as tents, sleeping bags and mattresses, worry not, we can hire them to you at very affordable rates, that is, tent hire (Kes 350.00), camping mattress hire (Kes 200.00) and sleeping bag hire (Kes 350.00) per day. However, you need to inform us early in order to book them for you and pay a deposit at least 1 week before the group tour.

Good quality camping gear can be purchased cheaply from the Game stores, Carrefour, www.decathlon.co.ke; https://safarioutfitterske.com/; https://www.mustek.co.ke/; https://www.builders.co.ke/Outdoor/Camping/c/Camping; Jiji - https://jiji.co.ke/ (exercise caution – pay only after delivery and confirmation that the goods are in good shape and genuine) amongst others.

We encourage each car to have its recovery gear (good quality tow rope, D-shackles, wheel jack, LOCK NUT SOCKET, jumper cables). However, this is not an absolute must. You can buy recovery gear from https://safarioutfitterske.com/; https://www.mustek.co.ke/; and at Ngara (that is, Nyayo Market, behind Equity Bank - Ngara Branch).

Yes. The campsite fronts directly the Indian Ocean and guys can camp right on the sand on the beach within a few steps from the ocean or further back under the shade of palm trees. It all depends on the person.
